Michael Benatar, MBChB, MS, DPhil
Dr. Benatar is an Associate Professor of Neurology in the School of Medicine and an Associate Professor of
Epidemiology in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. He hails originally from South Africa,
where he obtained his medical training. He then moved to Oxford University in the UK to complete a doctorate in
neuroscience. He was a neurology resident and neuromuscular fellow at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in
Boston. He acquired formal training in clinical trial design through a Master’s in the Science of Clinical
Research program at Emory University. He is also a graduate of the 2008 NINDS Clinical Trials Methods Course in
Neurology. Dr. Benatar’s primary research interests include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and myasthenia gravis,
with a particular focus on trial design for rare diseases. He is the principal investigator on two FDA-funded
multi-center clinical trials - a phase II/III randomized controlled trial of arimoclomol in SOD1 positive familial
ALS and a phase III trial of steroids in patients with ocular myasthenia.
