Karen Furie, MD, MPH
Dr. Karen L. Furie is the Director of the Stroke Service at the Massachusetts General
Hospital (MGH) and Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr.
Furie received her undergraduate degree in English and American Literature from
Brown University in 1987, an MD from Brown University School of Medicine (1990),
and a Masters in Public Health (1996) from Harvard University School of Public Health.
She joined the faculty of the MGH Stroke Service in the Neurology Department in
1995. Dr. Furie directs the J. Philip Kistler MGH Stroke Research Center. This facility
houses clinical researchers and research personnel, has neuroimaging analysis work
stations, and facilities for evaluating stroke research subjects. She co-directs
the Deane Institute for Integrative Research in Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation,
whose mission is to prevent stroke and reduce comorbidity related to cardioembolism.
Dr. Furie has been actively involved in diverse aspects of stroke clinical trials,
and is currently serving as the Principal Neurologist for the Insulin Resistance
Intervention in Stroke trial. In addition, her research has focused on stroke biomarkers,
including neuroimaging and genetic determinants of stroke. Dr. Furie is the Principal
Investigator for the Partners Specialized Program of Translational Research in Acute
Stroke (SPOTRIAS) and the Principal Investigator of the Harvard American Stroke
Association-Bugher Foundation Center for Stroke Prevention Research.
