Michael K. Parides, PhD
Michael K. Parides Ph.D. is Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Health
Evidence and Policy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He is
currently a principal investigator, along with Dr. Annetine Gelijns, of the data
coordinating center grant for the NHLBI and NINDS supported Cardiothoracic Surgery
Clinical Trials Network. The Network has designed a series of proof-of-concept trials
to address key unanswered questions in adult cardiac surgery. He is also co-principal
investigator of the Data Coordinating Center for the ARUBA Trial, examining the
efficacy of prophylactic interventional management of incidentally discovered arteriovenous
brain malformations versus expectant medical management and directs the statistical
core for the NHLBI-funded SCCOR program. The SCCOR program encompasses 7 clinical
trials examining treatments to resolve some of the limitations of Left Ventricular
Assist Device (LVAD) therapy in terms of their effect on coagulation and infection
as well as to explore the role of ist devices in supporting patients through myocardial
regeneration with transplantation of stem cells. For twenty years, Dr. Parides has
been teaching courses in biostatistics and clinical trials to students of diverse
backgrounds. His methodological interests include developing novel designs for clinical
trials, including adaptive methods employing both Bayesian and frequentist methods.
